Kyle and Olu’s wedding day was a joyous, colourful celebration of love, beginning with a beautiful church ceremony followed by a traditional Sri Lankan ceremony and party! Olu tells us more about their wedding…

Our day was made extra special by the friends and family that travelled from all over the world to celebrate with us, including the UK, Holland, Africa, Australia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.

It started with a Catholic marriage service at St Marks Parish in Pakuranga. The church was full to the brim and Kyle organised a surprise for me – his closest friends sang a special hymn Mo Maria to start the proceedings.

After we were officially married we made our way to Markovina Vineyard Estate. We wandered through their beautiful gardens as husband and wife and took some amazing photos.

Then it was time for me to change (with a lot of help from Mum) into my white wedding sari as we prepared for the traditional Sri Lankan marriage ceremony. The team at Markovina worked very hard to help my parents set up our marriage podium called the Poruwa, and the end result was stunning.

My mother-in-law and bridesmaids surprised me with scattered rose petals over all the reception tables as well as down the aisle leading to the podium.

The ceremony included traditional Sri Lankan dancers and a celebrant who led the proceedings. The finalé was a flame upon a coconut, the exchange of gifts and three maidens singing well wishes for our future. With the formalities over, everyone wasted no time in enjoying the delicious canapés and making use of the photo booth.

As much as this day was a joyous occasion, it was also bittersweet as Kyle’s father could not be there in person to celebrate with us as he had passed away unexpectedly four months prior. However, we knew that he would have been the first to remind us to enjoy our day and we could all feel his positive energy in the room that evening.

After cutting the cake we had our very first dance as husband and wife and then continued to dance with all our guests right up until the venue started to pack up... nobody wanted to go home. It was the perfect end to a perfect day!
