Fiona & Daniel

After meeting on a blind date, Fiona and Daniel Holdem were married at a venue that they won as part of a fundraiser for Christchurch.
Fiona fills us in on all the details…

Gracehill was the perfect venue for our Alice in Wonderland-themed wedding, especially the oversized chessboard where we held our ceremony. And it was good to know our money was going to a worthwhile cause. We wanted to make our wedding as personal as possible, so everyone who helped us was a family member, friend or acquaintance. From a friend’s father as celebrant, to friends making fabric bunting and hundreds of cupcakes – everyone pitched in. Even the cupcake toppers were sent by a distant relative who had I never met before! We spent a day setting up with coloured paper lanterns, metres of fabric and bunting, old keys scattered on the tables with tea pots, cups and books. Other props included handmade signs, 50 plastic flamingos and the odd skull here or there! The whole place was a riot of colour with interesting things to catch the eye. On the day, we tried to keep everything as unconventional as possible. The bridal party wore mismatching attire, and Dan had a best girl and best guy. The boys all wore corsages with a Star Wars character attached, and there was even an appearance by Darth Vader himself. There were many other special moments through the night – topped off with a wedding cake piñata and a dance-off to Michael Jackson’s Beat It!
