Cost-saving tips

cost cutting

Of all the events you plan in your life, your wedding is likely to be the most expensive. But it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to create a beautiful and memorable day.

The average cost of getting married in New Zealand is around $35,000. That’s a lot of money in anyone’s language – and you could easily spend twice that amount if you really wanted to get carried away. But you don’t have to pour tens of thousands of dollars into a single event. It is possible to get married on a more modest budget and still have one of the best days of your life.
  • Have your wedding on a weekday as it’s usually cheaper than the ever-popular Saturday.
  • Bake your own cake and have a professional ice and decorate it.
  • Send email invites or set up a website for your wedding.
  • Get married in the off-season – May to September.
  • Have your reception and ceremony at the same venue to save on transportation costs and flowers.
  • An eye-catching arrangement of iced cupcakes can be dismantled and boxed at the end of the evening to be sent home with guests as favours.
  • Much of the expense of a wedding gown lies in the fabric. Opt for the same style in a more economical fabric such as duchess satin, taffeta or chiffon.
  • Buffet meals allow hungrier guests to go back for more, and the staffing requirements are less so they’re cheaper than a plated menu.
  • Ask talented family and friends to contribute their skills in lieu of a gift.
